Becoming a Member

To be a member of Tau Beta Pi (TBP), you must show outstanding performance in the field of engineering. Member candidates, or initiates, are chosen each fall and spring based on their GPA. To be chosen, a student must be in the top eighth of his or her junior class, or the top fifth of his or her senior class. However, fulfilling the GPA requirement is only one part of becoming a true member of TBP. Initiates must complete a number of tasks such as community service projects and personal enrichment activities to show that they possess not only good grades, but exemplary character. These requirements for membership ensures that future members of TBP will maintain the honor and reputation that the society is respected for.

Member Responsibilities

Active Membership

Membership in Tau Beta Pi may never be taken away. Once initiated, you are considered a life member. However, the chapter differentiates its members as either "Active" or "Inactive" for parlimentary reasons prescribed by the national charter. Given this distinction, there several benefits from active membership. These include:
  • The ability to vote on important chapter considerations.
  • Social and profession activities like bowling tournaments, casual luncheons/dinners with UCD Faculty members, and resume workshops.
  • The ability to wear the TBP honor stole at your graduation.
  • Active Membership Requirements

The requirements for Active membership are simple, and are not meant to be time consuming. The following must be completed:

  • Attend at least one general meeting per quarter. Meetings usually take about 30 minutes, and pizza and soda are provided.
  • Participate in three hours of tutoring per year. These three hours can be split into three one-hour sessions. Tutoring is offered Tuesdays from 6 pm to 9 pm, and Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm. It is held in room 230 of the Biophysical Sciences Library.
  • Participate in one club activity per quarter. Activities do not take much time and are a great study break.
  • Of course, exceptions can be made in the event of scheduling conflicts.

If the above requirements are not fulfilled by the end of the quarter, you will lose active status for the next quarter. To regain active status, you must fulfill the requirements during your quarter of Inactive Status.
